An Overhead Line Trainer is responsible for delivering technical training to individuals working on overhead power line construction, maintenance, and safety. The role focuses on ensuring operatives are competent in industry standards, compliant with regulations, and capable of working safely on live or de-energised electrical networks. They typically support utility companies, contractors, and training centres by developing both theoretical knowledge and practical field skills.

Responsibilities

Deliver classroom and practical training on overhead line construction, maintenance, and safety procedures | Assess trainee competence through practical evaluations and written assessments | Ensure all training aligns with industry standards, regulations, and client-specific requirements | Develop and update training materials, course content, and lesson plans | Provide instruction on use of specialist tools, equipment, and PPE | Promote a strong safety culture including working at height, live line awareness, and risk assessment | Maintain accurate training records, certifications, and compliance documentation | Support new starters, apprentices, and upskilling of experienced operatives | Liaise with employers and clients to tailor training programmes to operational needs |

Experience

Proven experience working on overhead power lines (distribution or transmission) | Recognised industry certifications such as City & Guilds or equivalent in overhead line work | Training or assessing qualification (e.g. AET, PTLLS, or equivalent) preferred | Strong knowledge of health & safety
